About
Sofía Escudero is a general trauma therapist for queer and trans people in Oakland, CA. She uses a relational psychodynamic approach to help trauma survivors establish trust and safety within themselves and start to feel more agency in relationships. Sofía has sought out a broad range of trainings and exposure to various therapeutic modalities and integrates principles of ACT, DBT, attachment theory, liberation psychology, and mindfulness into her work, depending on what is most relevant for each client. Additional specialized trainings and qualifications include: Assessment and letter-writing for gender-affirming care; Conducting mental health evaluations for immigration cases (asylum, U visa, T visa, and VAWA). Sofía is bilingual and works in English, Spanish or Spanglish. As a queer cis woman, Sofía is passionate about helping queer and trans clients heal from traumatic experiences. Sofía's approach to therapy includes a strong attention to systems of oppression and the impacts of marginalization on mental health, as well as the ways that power moves through structures like therapy. She welcomes feedback at any point in the therapy process and believes that the relationship between client and therapist is a powerful instrument for healing.

Message to clients
You've been through a lot. If you've had to make your own way through traumatic experiences, you've likely found some great strategies to keep functioning, but at a cost to yourself. You may be an expert at keeping it all together, but still be really suffering on the inside. Are you tired of feeling depleted, and ready for more ease and support in your life? You deserve more than survival: you deserve safety and trust within yourself, and relationships that make you feel connected and joyful. You deserve to thrive! I work with queer and trans people who have experienced trauma to help them better understand how their past influences their emotional and mental patterns, which helps them access more agency in their daily lives. This looks different with every client, and I seek out your feedback early and often. I always want you to feel heard and respected in our work. My therapy practice includes attention to the systems we move through and their impacts on mental health because I understand how queer and trans people experience multiple kinds of trauma in different contexts. I want to help you process and make sense of experiences of systemic transphobia and racism just as much as I want to talk through your challenging family dynamics. If anything here struck a chord with you, please reach out and schedule a free consultation: let's get a sense of what it might feel like to work together. I look forward to hearing from you!

Jill Hartman, LMFT
Sofia is a wonderful combination of warmth, compassion and professionalism. She meets clients where they are, and, while she has a person-centered approach, she is always willing to experiment with different approaches should her clients' needs warrant that. As a colleague, Sofia is someone with whom I felt almost immediately comfortable, and I have to believe she has a similar effect on her clients.
Hez Wollin, LCSW
Sofia is a joy to work with. She is an amazing therapist who is wise beyond her years. Generous of presence and of spirit, Sofia brings integrity and passion to her work, and helps people to heal at the intersections of the personal, the collective, and the intergenerational.
Lauren Greis, LCSW
Not only is Sofia kind, funny, and open-hearted, she is also an intuitive and highly skilled therapist. She listens deeply, practices thoughtfully, and puts care into building a therapeutic relationship that helps clients to feel ‘seen’ and cared for. Sofia would be a good match for many therapy-seekers, and has extensive experience working with LGBTQ+ folks and trauma survivors, as well as others impacted by systems of oppression.
